Please feel free to come back and tell everyone what you think.
Gorillas can go bananas at Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo as the park supports the 2009 Year of the Gorilla, a world-wide appeal promoted by WAZA (World Association of Zoo’s and Aquaria). There will be a variety of events going on throughout May half term, and you can even get free entrance if you turn up dressed as a gorilla!
Throughout the week visitors will be entertained with gorilla related activities to raise as much money as possible. Many of the animal talks, presentations and meet n’ greets will have a gorilla theme, and there will be plenty of opportunities to support this worthwhile charity.
You will also get a chance to see Chessington Zoo’s baby Western Lowland Gorilla, born on the 10 March 2009 to proud parents Buu and Damisi. Guests had the chance to help pick the baby boy’s name by voting on the Chessington website, the winning name was recently announced as Mbula, meaning ‘year’ in African Tribal Languages.
Marc Boardman, Manager of Chessington Zoo, said: “The Year of the Gorilla was set up to help educate the wider public audience on the plight of Gorillas in the wild. Chessington will use the May half-term break to highlight the deforestation and bush-meat issues which are threatening their very existence. Any money raised will go directly to protecting Gorillas in the wild. Chessington Zoo has one of the most successful breeding groups in Europe, with three generations of Gorillas, and we are proud to be working alongside participating Zoo’s throughout the world in a collective effort to ensure that healthy future populations remain in the wild.”
