    Shards of light pierce the azure blue water...reflecting briefly on the back of a passing sea turtle, which turns lazily and disappears behind a wall of coral.

    A small boy watches spellbound as the turtle, over a metre long, passes over his head. The boy cranes his neck so far that his mother tightens her grip on his tiny hand lest he topples backwards.

    They are standing in a huge acrylic tube which runs through the centre of a mighty aquarium tank.

    This is the ocean display at the National SEA LIFE Centre, Birmingham, flagship of a network of SEA LIFE attractions now spanning nine European countries - the UK, Germany, Finland, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and Ireland - plus the US.

    2. Chessington World of Adventures

    Chessington Zoo was founded in 1931 in the grounds of a country mansion of considerable history. As far as can be traced, the original mansion was built in 1348, probably as a country house named Chessington Lodge. It is thought that it was used as a school for Officers in Archery, and a visit from Queen Elizabeth I resulted in an act being passed permitting the practice of archery in the grounds on Sundays.

    The original building became a Cavalier stronghold during the Civil War (1642-1660), and was burnt to the ground by Cromwell's forces. Rebuilt after the restoration, it was renamed 'Burnt Stub', and has continued to be so known.
